USIM Debaters Made Country Proud At IUADC 2017

NILAI, April 13 (Bernama) -- Arabic debaters from Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) made the country proud when they emerged runner-up in the International Universities Arabic Debating Championships (IUADC) 2017 in Doha, Qatar, yesterday.

The USIM debating team comprised Muhammad Muzakkir Ahmad Dali, Anis Amirah Zakaria, Nur Akma Mohd Dali and Muhammad Syafiq Suhaimi, all of whom are students in Syariah and Law at the USIM Faculty of Syariah & Law.

Competing in the non-native Arabic speakers category, along with 30 university debating teams from several countries, the USIM debaters performed remarkably well to win the competition in the various rounds.

They beat Deakin University, Australia; German Europe Institution, Germany; Meridian Atuluku, Turkey; Indonesian Islamic University and the University of Real Madrid, Spain.

In the final round, they met debaters from Sciences Po, or Paris Institute of Political Studies, France.

Muhammad Syafiq said reaching the final of this most prestigious Arabic debating championship was already a huge success for USIM and Malaysia as the competition was great.

"We managed to maintain the momentum of our performance and focus in every debate from the beginning till the end.

"The pressure was there, but we managed to control the situation through intensive individual and group training, reading, friendly debates and experience from previous competitions.

"This is a sweet victory for us and coach Ahmad Norsyafwan Norwavi who is also here with us. We would also like to thank the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Datuk Dr Hassan Basri Awang Mat Dahan and our friends from the USIM Debate Club for their prayers and support," he said in a statement here, today.

Meanwhile, another USIM debater, Nur Akma was ranked second of best overall speaker at the IUADC 2017.

This is the second outstanding achievement by USIM debate team at international level this year, after being crowned as champions of the Ihtifal ASEAN Arabic Debating Championship held at the USIM Campus here earlier this month.

As runner-up, the team received a trophy and a certificate of appreciation from organisers, Qatar Debate.

Meanwhile, the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) Arabic debaters Abdul Rahim Ellias, Mohamad Ikmal Hakimi Mohamad Helni, Muhammad Nazri Rostam and Muhammad Nurfirman Mohamed also made the country proud when they emerged runner-up in the open category.

This was the fourth edition of the biennial IUADC held since its inception in 2011.

Eighty-six teams from 46 countries participated in the competition which took place at the Qatar National Convention Centre in Doha from April 8 to 12.
