SAMUT PRAKAN, April 16 (Bernama) -- A total of 40 long distance learning programme students from Universiti Utara Malaysia Kuala Lumpur campus have embarked on a charity programme at a Muslim village in Phra Pradaeng, about 11 kilometres from Bangkok.

The charity programme director, Shahrul Nizam Khalil said the students were involved in repairing houses as well as handing financial assistance, food and equipment to the poor and less fortunate villagers.

"We fork out our own expenses to Thailand to ensure that the charity programme will achieve its objective in helping the poor and less fortunate," he told Bernama here recently.

The programme, which was held in collaboration with Yayasan Salam and the Malaysian Embassy in Thailand, also served as course framework for the Semester Four students.

Malaysian Ambassador to Thailand, Datuk Nazirah Hussain, who officiated the programme, hoped that it would forge closer ties not just between the two governments but also between the people of both countries.
