Three New Polytechnics Raise Total Number Nationwide To 36

SANDAKAN, May 12 (Bernama) -- The opening of three more polytechnics is in line with the education institution's role in becoming the largest industrial workforce supplier in the country, said Department of Polytechnic Education deputy director-general (strategic) Shabudin Man.

He said two polytechnics, one in Batu Pahat, Johor, and the other in Besut, Terengganu, would have their first intake in June while the Metro Polytechnic in Tawau, Sabah, would begin to recruit students at the end of this year.

The additional polytechnics would raise to 36 nationwide the total number of polytechnics, which serve as technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions.

"The new polytechnics will enable these institutions which have existed since 1969 to continue to contribute to the country's development in terms of providing the necessary manpower. Each year, between 25,000 and 30,000 students graduate from polytechnics in the country," he said at the Sandakan Polytechnic Appreciation Night with the media here last night.

According to Shabudin, 90 per cent of polytechnic graduates secure jobs in the private and government sector as well as agencies, and the Department of Polytechnic Education aimed to raise this to 95 per cent.
