KUALA LUMPUR, May 16 (Bernama) -- A total of 2,664 students from Universiti Malaya (UM) and Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) have been selected as pioneer participants of the "Usahawan Belia Pengajian Tinggi Balik Kampung (U2Desa) programme.

Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the programme was aimed at encouraging students to create jobs in their hometown as well as developing rural economy.

"The uniqueness of the U2Desa programme is that it encourages young entrepreneurs from higher education institutions to return to their villages and remain there to operate businesses and thus will play the key role in the development of the villages," he said after officiating the programme at the Dewan Tuanku Chancellor, Universiti Malaya, today.

Elaborating, he said that entrepreneurship lecturers, Village Development and Security committee, local cooperatives, and youth associations would guide and assist the students in preparing detailed profiling of 400 selected villages.

Under the programme, students need to study and identify the resources available in their villages with the potential to be developed in sustainable manner before preparing business plan for the area.

Each business plan would be evaluated and only idea with potential to be viable would be given an initial capital of RM10,000 to kick start the business.

The students are also required to achieve key performance indicators (KPI) set by the ministry to create at least two new jobs in each village and a five per cent increase in revenue by the village cooperative after one year of operating the business.
