TELUK INTAN, July 10 (Bernama) -- Construction of the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) campus here is expected to begin in October at a cost of more than RM120 million, said Teluk Intan Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong.

Mah, who is Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities, said the Public Works Department (JKR) issued the tender for the second phase, involving the construction of the campus buildings, in June.

He said construction work under the first phase, involving soil treatment, began in February 2016 and was completed on June 5 in preparation for the construction of the buildings on almost 20 hectares of the total 32 hectares.

"The total cost of building the UPSI campus is not expected to exceed RM200 million, including the RM40 million under the first phase to procure the land, clean the site, and reclaim and treat the land," he said.

Mah spoke at a press conference after the handing over of Phase 1 of the construction of the UPSI Faculty of Technical and Vocational Education, Teluk Intan Campus, at Batu 4, Changkat Jong here today.

Also present were Changkat Jong state assemblyman Datuk Mohammad Azhar Jamaluddin, Perak JKR director Datuk Jamilol Nasir Saad and Hilir Perak district officer Shahrunaim Radzali.

The UPSI campus construction project, planned for in 2011, comes under the 10th Malaysia Plan. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced the establishment of the UPSI Teluk Intan campus during the Teluk Intan parliamentary by-election in 2014.

Mah said that with the UPSI campus as well as those of other universities like Universiti Teknologi Mara and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and the community and vocational colleges in Teluk Intan, the Hilir Perak district was set to become a national education hub by 2020.

Meanwhile, Jamilol Nasir said Hakikat Engineering Sdn Bhd had been appointed as the main contractor while the Hilir Perak District JKR supervised the project under the first phase.

It is understood that it would take about 30 months under the second phase to build 21 blocks of buildings which can accommodate 1,000 students.
