He said the universities were Universiti Putra Malaysia (229th in the QS World University Ranking), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (230th) , Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (253rd) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (264th).

"Universiti Malaya (UM) which is currently at 114th place is expected to be included in the 100 best universities in the world in one to two years," he said at the ministry's Aidilfitri open house, here, today.

"Several world recognition in the field of higher education this year have shown that public universities are always improving the quality of their education system," he said.

Idris said he had met with the chancellors of all the research universities today to discuss ways to increase world recognition for local higher education.

He added that financial constraints faced by the public universities should not stop them from improving and excelling.
