KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 6 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Rural and Regional Development is studying the proposed setting up of a paying Mara Junior Science college (MRSM) to cover the intake of outstanding students nationwide.

Its minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) received many applications from parents with high income for their children, who performed very well in the Primary School Assessment Report (UPSR), to study in MRSM.

"Mara always ensures excellent students from lower income (B40) and middle income (M40) families, especially in rural areas, are given the priority to obtain the best secondary education in MRSM.

"So for outstanding students from high income families who can afford to finance their children's education can be placed in the paying MRSM but its name may be different from the existing MRSM," he said when replying to a question from Senator Datuk Mohd Suhaimi Abdullah during the question-and-answer session at the Dewan Negara sitting today.

Ismail Sabri said the proposed establishment was to ensure all excellent students, who were qualified, had the opportunity to continue their education at fully residential schools.
