PUTRAJAYA, Jan 2 (Bernama) -- The appearance of Pikachu as well as Upin and Ipin animated characters enlivened the first day of the school at Sekolah Kebangsaan Putrajaya Presint 11 (1) here today.

The presence of the three well-known characters from the Pokemon and Upin Ipin cartoon series brought joy and lifted the spirit of anxious first-time school-goers.

SK Putrajaya Presint 11 (1) headmistress Rohana Abd Manaf said the purpose of featuring the three mascots was to help Year One pupils overcome their fears and anxiety in a new environment.

She said the move to create a cheerful and enjoyable atmosphere was to motivate Year One children to come to school.

"The moment they caught sight of the mascots they were excited and smiling happily," she said when met today.

Apart from the cartoon characters the appearance of twins Darwisya Adriana and Darwisya Sophia Mohd Helmie at the school also attracted attention on the first day of the school.

The twin-sisters were among 266 Year One pupils at SK Putrajaya Presint 11 (1).

According to their mother, Norlizawaty Baharin, 33, the pair were placed in the same class to keep each other company as they had never been apart since small.

Earlier Rohana accompanied Putrajaya Federal Territory Education Department director Roaini Jaafar on a tour round the school.

Speaking to reporters Roaini said a total of 25,360 students started their schooling session in the federal administrative centre here, today.

Of the total 17,261 were primary school children in 14 schools and 8,099 secondary school students in 11 schools, she added.
