Floods: Nine Schools Closed In Kelantan, Sarawak, Terengganu

SEREMBAN, Jan 2 (Bernama) -- Nine schools hit by floods in Kelantan, Sarawak and Terengganu were closed today, said Deputy Education Minister Datuk P. Kamalanathan.

He said apart from three schools in Kelantan's Kuala Krai district, two schools in Terengganu's Dungun district and one in Kemaman district, three Sarawak schools (one in Belaga district and two in Subis district) were also closed

"So far, nine schools are closed temporarily and they will reopen when the floods subside. The closure and reopening of the schools are decided by the respective State Security Councils, not the schools."

He said this to reporters after the handing-over of Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Tamil) Ladang Cairo new building in Mantin, near here, today.

Also present was Negeri Sembilan Education Department director, Pkharuddin Ghazali.

On the new school building, Kamalanathan said the project was under a federal government special package announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in 2012.

He said it took some time to complete the project as there were land and several other issues involved.

"The three-storey school building with nine classrooms had cost RM2.03 million to build. The Education Ministry had also allocated RM230,000 for maintenance in 2015 and an additional RM150,000 in the forthcoming months for restoration works at the school," he said.
