February Launch For Sarawak School Upgrade Project

Last update: 05/01/2018
KUCHING, Jan 5 (Bernama) -- The first phase of the school rehabilitation or rebuilding project in Sarawak is scheduled to commence in February.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said all processes regarding the assessment of the project would hopefully be finalised within this month.

He said the Ministry of Education was also compiling and finalising the list of schools for the project in order of priority.

"The project will be implemented by two different agencies ? Education Ministry and Public Works Department (PWD).

"To monitor the funds and project coordinated by the PWD, a task force has been formed. I will head the task force for Sarawak while Works Deputy Minister Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin will head that for Sabah,? he told a press conference here today.

Fadillah said the PWD would subsequently hold a meeting on the most suitable approach in implementing the project.

"Sarawak has a vast area; there are schools in remote locations where the industrialised building system (IBS) may not be feasible .

"A joint meeting among the state government, state Education Department, District Education Office and relevant parties will be held to ensure that the project uses the best approach for speedy and effective implementation within the set budget and target," he said.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who is also Finance Minister announced while presenting the Budget 2018 that Sarawak and Sabah had been allocated RM1 billion each, to upgrade their schools.
