MOHE Confident Number Of Bumiputera Accountants To Increase By 2030

SHAH ALAM, Jan 29 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) is confident that the number of chartered accountants among Bumiputera can be increased between 20 and 30 per cent by 2030.

Minister Datuk Seri idris Jusoh said the success of the Malaysia Professional Accounting Centre (MyPAC) in producing 110 Bumiputera chartered accountants since its inception three years ago could be a game changer to achieve the target.

He said although the country had only eight per cent or 1,800 Bumiputera chartered accountants, MyPAC's ongoing efforts in creating awareness on the importance of the accounting field could draw the interest of the group.

"At the moment, MyPAC has over 2,000 students and this year hundreds more are expected to graduate. The tireless efforts by the organisation are seen as the best formula to ensure that the number of Bumiputera chartered accountants is increasing," he told reporter after the MyPAC Award ceremony here today.

Meanwhile, MyPAC chief executive officer Datuk Zaiton Mohd Hassan said the small number of Bumiputera chartered accountants was due to the lack of awareness and confidence in their ability to pass the ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) examination.

"No doubt it is quite difficult to pass the ACCA examination as it is based on international standards but many Bumiputera students have done it. In fact, some have even achieved outstanding results. Most of MyPAC graduates were offered jobs right after graduation," she said.

As such, Zaiton said in order to increase the number of Bumiputera chartered accountants, MyPAC had taken the initiative to bring in accounting experts from the BPP Professional Education, United Kingdom to train its lecturers.
