KUALA LUMPUR, March 29 (Bernama) -- The total amount of 'wakaf' funds collected in 14 public universities nationwide stands at RM26.16 million until now, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh said the highest collection was from Universiti Putra Malaysia amounting to RM9.1 million, Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (RM6.5 million) and Universiti Islam Malaysia (RM5.6 million).

"Currently, there are 14 public universities already having their own Wakaf (Islamic endowment) centres and now six more are in the final stages of getting the 'mutawalli' or trustee from their respective state Islamic religious councils to collect wakaf funds," he said in reply to a question by Datuk Dr Nik Mazian Nik Mohamad (PAS-Pasir Puteh) who wanted to know the list of universities that collected wakaf and the amount of contributions collected from 2008 to 2017.

However, Idris said the amount was still low, hence he encouraged the public to contribute towards the endowment fund to help increase the income of public universities besides being a charitable deed.

"Several measures have been implemented by the ministry to promote the wakaf culture with the latest being on March 20, we launched the My Wakaf programme to encourage everyone to contribute RM100," he said.

Meanwhile, Idris said the ministry was discussing with the Finance Ministry to obtain tax exemption for the endowment fund.
