KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 13 (Bernama) -- Fourteen law students today received the Tun Suffian Scholarship awards worth over RM200,000.

Tun Suffian Foundation Scholarship Committee chairman Tunku Datuk Dr Sofiah Jewa said this was the first time they were giving scholarships to law students studying locally.

She said the scholarships were awarded strictly on merit and without regard to race and religion.

The scholarships include annual book fees, miscellaneous allowances, living expenses and tuition fees that were given to 11 LLB students, one LLM student and two PhD students.

Tunku Sofiah said the foundation also aimed to establish a Tun Suffian Chair on Constitutional Law at the University of Malaya.

"We want to promote the philosophies and hopes of the late Tun Suffian among the country's younger generation with the hope that they will put into practice the values and aspirations of that great man," she said.

The Tun Suffian Foundation, named after former Lord President Tun Mohamed Suffian Hashim, was established on June 11, 2002 under the joint royal patronage of the Perak Sultan and Raja Permaisuri.
